33 Weird Statues and Sculptures Around The World

Probably you have seen some of these wonderful statues before, but I think it’s worthy to have a collection of these 33 weired art works in one single page.So here they come:

The Magic Tap:

Magic tap, which appears to float in the sky with an endless supply of water. In actuality, there is a pipe hidden in the stream of water.

Location: Aqualand, Cadiz.

Madame Chapeau:

Designed to create a dynamics between two streets, this sculpture beams with its presence in the space that was allocated to the artist. The lady is fearlessly counting her money in an area of Brussels that is famous for its pickpockets. She even teases them with her unsnatchable bronze wallet!

Location: Brussels , Belgium.

La Trobe :

A contemporary representation of Charles La Trobe in central Melbourne (This temporary installation was removed at the end of June 2006 and has been acquired by La Trobe University).

Location: Melbourne

The Hanging Rhino :

Location: Potsdam

The Thumb :

Location: Paris - near Arc de la Defense

Man at work :

This bronze statue is located in the pedestrian zone of Bratislava. Rub its nose, and you will have fortune. I am sure many people believe in that as have a look at the nose, it looks badly rubbed.

Location: Bratislava

De Vaartkapoen :

Low down, a young rebel, the Vaartkapoen, reminiscent of a jack-in-the-box, topples over a policeman higher up, thus overthrowing his authority.

Location: Brussels , Belgium

Vigelands Parken :

Location: Oslo, Norway.

The Fremont troll

The Fremont troll has been lurking under the north end of the Aurora bridge since 1990. He was sculpted by four Seattle area artists — Steve Badanes, Will Martin, Donna Walter and Ross Whitehead — for the Fremont Arts Council. The head-and-shoulders sculpture is 18-ft. tall.

Location: Aurora bridge, Seattle, Washington

Melting cow

This cow is situated in Budapest downtown on Vorosmarty ter (square). Like a melting blue ice cream.

Location: Budapest

Eating a Biscuit together

Located in Seoul, Korea,in front of the Bukcheon Museum. Sculptor is Ku BomJu.
Location: Seoul, Korea

Los Angeles

A true to life art work in front of the Ernst & Young building.
Location: Los Angeles

The Shark :

The Shark became the most famous resident of Headington when it landed in the roof of 2 New High Street (see map) on 9 August 1986.This ordinary home (built as a semi-detached house in about 1860 but now attached by a link to a second house to the north) suddenly became the centre of world attention, and the headless shark still excites interest today.

Location:2 New High Street, Headington, Oxford.

Santa Fe

Location:Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Mona Lisa

A Mona Lisa made of computer chips.
Location: Asus Headquarters.

Location:Manhattan , USA.

Location: Stockholm , Sweden.

The floating fosset is the best, although all of these sculptures are cool in their own right.

#9 J.E. Remy on 01.04.08 at 2:43 am

The woman spinning with the child (seventh from the bottom) is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. We have a few odd “people in motion” bronze statues around town.

This was so much fun and mesmerizing - as I sit here lulling my 3month back to sleep at 4am ~ Thanks for the great collection!
p.s. Just thinking… when humans are completely gone and these statues are the only remnants left - what meanings will be implied ? hehe! :)

#15 drpig on 01.04.08 at 3:06 am

I think listing these images is nice enough, but the artists have names. Wouldn’t it be better to find out the names of the artists and credit them appropriately?

#41 Jonni on 01.04.08 at 8:40 am

I saw the one in Vorosmarty Ter! There are cows all over Budapest, some sort of artsy fartsy thing, random cows, random places. I have a pic of me w/ the “Handicap Cow,” it’s got wheels for it’s hind legs. Pretty cool, maybe I’ll post them up later…

…not that you care.

I believe the “knotted” gun in at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town , South Africa. It was made from melted down firearms handed in after a “Gun Amnesty”.

The statue of the boys jumping into the River is near Boat Quay in Singapore.

The one with the giant man peeing seems anatomically incorrect. The hand seems to be wrong. If you look at it it looks like his thumb is on the outside, away from the inner thigh. It could be his pinky I cannot position my second finger from my pinky like that. It might just be me but it looks very aquard. Overall the list is killer.

The third to last [ The people in line ] is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington D.C. depicting a bread line during the Great Depression.
The memorial itself is a work of art, and is very moving when you see it in person.

#106 Guinnevere on 01.14.08 at 6:46 pm

These are all interesting, many are hilarious, and as others have said, some are quite disturbing. The one that made the most powerful statement to me was the bloated figure of white ‘Justice,’ with the crooked sword, sitting on the shoulders of an emaciated black man. More truth than poetry, there.

1. I live in Stockholm, and I am not sure if this man in the water in Stockholm still exists.

2. The gun in the lower part of the listing is situated in Stockholm, near Hötorget. However it is not the original, but a smaller copy of the gun in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

#119 Meri Forrest on 01.16.08 at 4:00 am

A wonderful collection of whimsical offerings. Why aren’t the artists names displayed? Would you quote an excerpt from a book or play a piece of music before quite rightly naming the author or composer. I am a sculptor myself and have seen many articles on the Red Dog sculpture at Dampier West Australia but nary a mention of my name. Lets make it a goal to see the credits run for all these Sculptors and perhaps thereby create a precident for the naming of the creators of sculpture.

#128 Denae on 01.17.08 at 2:27 pm

It’s crazy what other countries get away with!

#129 Sachin Pillai on 01.18.08 at 4:07 am

#130 BoB on 01.18.08 at 8:07 am

Sweet,I saw two of the ones in Bratislava,The man creeping out of the manhole & the paparazzi poking around the corner, I think it would be cool to find them all while travelling.

#131 shela javines on 01.18.08 at 10:46 pm

#133 Ross on 01.19.08 at 6:01 am

Wow thats amazing.

#134 Jesse on 01.19.08 at 8:09 am

Does it not occur to ANYONE who has commented, that there are artists responsible for these amazing works? Do they have names?

#135 K on 01.19.08 at 4:22 pm

Here’s another statue made by Vigeland:

http://www.museumsnett.no/vigelandmuseet/2parken/2f_monolitten/images/monostor.jpg

#136 Smiler on 01.19.08 at 8:31 pm

I agree with Jesse. This is a very cool lineup and a very interesting post, but including the artist’s names would be the decent thing to do. They can’t be all that hard to find with a little bit of research.

#137 Philipp Schumann on 01.19.08 at 11:28 pm

Wow, I have lived both in Potsdam and Oxford. Two unimportant small towns, but just about the only small towns that made this list (apart from Tübingen).

Weird statues are even better if you’re a resident passing them every so often. “Hi again, weird rhino / shark.”

#138 Foxinni - Wordpress Designer on 01.20.08 at 8:04 am

Very Cool. Some of them looks a bit fake. Some clever photoshopping. Nice post!

#139 yoxx on 01.20.08 at 6:54 pm

#140 jess on 01.20.08 at 8:34 pm

hi.
The fountain guy kneeling on a round ball with water coming out of his ears/eyes/moth is located in Malmo, sweden. Where I happen to live. There are 3 of thoes figurines ontop of that rather large fountain.

I’m proud to say the statue of the little boys pushing each other into the river is found along the Singapore River. yes, i’m a Singaporean, and it’s not in China.

BOOBIES

#147 Myrna on 01.22.08 at 12:58 pm

i heard another rumour about the man in the tree in amsterdam (leidseplein). I heard that the sculptor is a dentist, who places more weird art in Amsterdam. This ‘ statue” is so tiny, I hadn’t seen it for one year traveling by the tree. So maybe the story is true and there are more statues, still undiscoverd! Mabye you can put the info over there, that it is in Amsterdam, artist unknown (cause he pleases…. he/she placed the artwork in the night)

#151 Caroline on 01.24.08 at 2:33 am

These were cool, but why didn’t you identify where all of them were? I would like to know if any of them are in a city I might be visiting, so I would know to look for them.

#152 slanyah on 01.24.08 at 3:49 am

Amazing! :-)

#154 Caisa on 01.24.08 at 11:58 am

Loved the pics.

My friend and I passed the statue in the water in Stockholm everyday. One day we mentioned that all that was missig was a cock or pair of tits. Someone else had the same idea. The next day a big cock was poking up through the water, unfortunately it was only there a day or so.

#155 Grace on 01.24.08 at 1:18 pm

#158 Stuart Lucas on 01.25.08 at 3:41 am

Great list. All the people moaning about names. How about finding out for yourselves?
Just to show that weird sculpture doesn’t need to be modern this one is in Rome just behind the Pantheon and is by a renaissance artist (Bernini)

This one is also Rome. It is in the courtyard just outside the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. If you push it gently it spins!

Apart from these, the building with the piercing in Torino is also one of my favourites. There are even stains of blood.

#163 Elizabeth on 01.25.08 at 1:04 pm

Love the balance of the woman swinging the little girl. Most are wonderful. You didn’t say the ones towards the bottom were from.

#164 Chandira on 01.25.08 at 4:47 pm

The Fremont Troll is about half a mile from my old house. That’s a real VW Bug buried in it.

Great page!

#169 Rachel on 01.26.08 at 4:18 pm

#170 Winston Arthur on 01.26.08 at 4:34 pm

I find these sculptures very interesting, fascinating in some cases. Suggestion: post pix of sculptured ornamental trees from around the world.

The woman bathing in the concrete is by David Phelps and it’s in San Antonio, TX. There’s also one that he did in Knoxville, Tennessee that I like better called “The Oarsman”.

#177 Bluesrains on 01.27.08 at 1:26 am

#178 FF on 01.27.08 at 3:11 am

Regarding the greenish and contour-ized peeing guy statue in Praha/Prague (18th from the top, at the moment):

1. The penis is actually animatronic and moves up/down/left/right idly.

2. There’s actually a pool he’s standing in (and peeing into) that’s also part of the exhibit.

3. There’s a cell phone number posted nearby that you can send text messages (SMS) to, and the statue will WRITE YOUR MESSAGE INTO THE POOL USING ITS ‘PEE’. *grin* It’s done one letter at a time, but still pretty unique.

Back in the 1960s. The Ripley’s Believe-it-or-Not Museum in Chicago had one of those running faucet statues near the entrance. Not quite as big as the one pictured here, though!

#187 Josh on 05.20.08 at 10:21 am

I don’t know that it’s a sculpture, but I’ve always enjoyed the Kansas City Public Library.

New Orleans, Louisiana has a lot of bronze people placed around the French Quarter.

Also, the Women & Children’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama has a wonderful collection of children all along the road that enters the hospital parking lot.
